The world's most maternal species of tortoise is the Asian brown tortoise (Manouria emys), the female of which remains close to her nesting site, guarding it from potential egg-snatchers, for several days after having laid her eggs there. Other tortoises, conversely, either show no maternal interest in their eggs at all after laying them, or spend no more than an hour or so concealing their eggs and the nesting site.
