On 6 June 1944, the Allied Forces launched the greatest combined operation in history with the largest seaborne invasion force ever attempted – Operation Overlord. Three million men were assembled in the United Kingdom under General Eisenhower’s command. Some 5,300 ships carried 155,000 men supported by 1,500 tanks and 12,000 aircraft in the first wave of landings on five beaches in Normandy, France.
