The conflict that begain in Zaire – now the Democratic Republic of the Congo – in August 1998, and officially ended in July 2003, is known as the Second Congo War or the Great African War. It involved eight African states: Zaire, Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe, Chad, Namibia and Sudan. Around 5.4 million people died as a result – the majority because of disease and starvation. In the Congo, one in five children dies before the age of five. Many millions were displaced and it is the worst conflict worldwide since the Second World War and the deadliest Africa has ever known.
