MH-1A was built inside a converted cargo ship for the US Army. A pressurized water reactor, MH-1A began operation in 1967. The ship, whose engines had been removed to make way for the reactor, was towed to the Panama Canal where it provided electrical power to the Panama Canal Zone between 1968 and 1975. It was capable of providing 10 MW of power but was retired in 1975.
The ship, Sturgis, was a former Liberty ship called SS Charles H. Cugle. She is currently part of the James River Reserve Fleet.
