Calder Hall, in Cumbria, UK, was the first nuclear power station to provide electricity on a commercial scale. It was officially opened on 17 October 1956 by Queen Elizabeth II. Its four Magnox reactors were capable of producing 60 MWe each. Its initial primary purpose was to produce weapons grade plutonium, with electricity generation as a by-product.
