Light pollution in urban areas drowns out much of the natural night sky. In addition to representing energy waste, it can lead to confusion in nocturnal species. In 2001, Italian and American astronomers released the first global map highlighting the problem. According to the data, around 20% of the world’s population can no longer see the Milky Way in the night sky from their homes.
