Guiyu, a collection of villages in Guangdong Province, China, is the world capital of electronic waste. Around 1.5 million tonnes of discarded computers, cell phones and other electronics are processed here each year, within an area of 52 km2. The resulting pollution from heavy metals and acids is believed to be responsible for various local health issues, including levels of lead present in dust up to 330 times that present in similar dust between 8 and 30 km away.
