In 1921, the world's first dual-carriage highway, specifically built for higher speed traffic, was opened between the Italian towns of Milan and Varese. Now forming part of the A8 and A9 motorway network, the original road was opened in 1924, with a single lane in each direction separated by a crash barrier.
