Despite being submerged daily by the incoming tide, the beach airport at Barra in the Scottish Western Isles is the busiest of its type in the world, handling over 1,000 flights per year. Despite having to accommodate regular tidal incursions it is the only beach airport to handle scheduled airline services, and boasts a modern control tower that stands in stark contrast to its sandy runway. Barra Airport has featured in many documentaries and films over the years and the island is famous for being the last resting place of Compton Mackenzie, author of Whisky Galore!. The airport opened in June 1936.
