When operating, the two Ice Runways at Antarctica's McMurdo Station are the longest of their type in the world, each measuring 10,000 feet long and 220 feet wide. These temporary super-sized runways are carved out of sea ice and are able to accommodate extra-large aircraft such as the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy and the C-17 Globemaster III.
Located at -77.854º latitude and 166.469º longitude, the runways are built on sea ice (which begins its annual melt each December) and so have an elevation of just 1 foot. Pilots who have used the airstrips liken the experience on landing on concrete, although unlike concrete the aircraft usually sink slightly into the ice shortly after landing.
