Airport with the longest bridge-supported runway extension

Madeira International Airport has the longest bridge-supported runway in the world. Extended to accommodate larger aircraft such as 747s, the bridge supported section of the runway is 1,020 metres long and 180 metres wide, bringing the total length of the runway to 2,781 metres. The bridge extension was built partially over the sea and is supported on 180 pillars. It cost a total of 520 million euros to construct and brought the capacity of the airport up to 3.5 million visitors per year. The runway extension received the “Outstanding Structure Award” from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
