Kansai International Airport, constructed 3 miles off-shore in Osaka Bay, Japan, is home to the world’s longest airstrip on a purpose-built island. The 13,123 ft airstrip sits on an artificial structure that is 2.5 miles long by 1.6 miles wide – so vast that it can be seen from space. The island supports two airstrips (11,483 ft and 13,123 ft), which can be reached by car, rail or high-speed ferry. Some critics have pointed out that rising sea levels may see much of the airport disappear underwater within the next fifty years.
