In 1848 John Bacon Curtis (USA) produced the first ever branded, commercially produced chewing gum. Called The State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum, it was created by cooking spruce tree resin on a stove to make a sticky, rubbery material that could be chewed.
Further experimentation by Curtis revealed that the addition of paraffin and flavourings made the gum even more palatable.
