It was founded in 1997 by Bruce Nash and is visited by more than 8 million people every year. As well as movie fans, the major studios, independent production companies and investors use the site and its services to decide which movies to make and when to release them. The site gathers data from the movie studios, retailers, news reports and other sources to compile its comprehensive database, known as OpusData. The database contains in excess of 14 million facts about the movie business.

The highest-grossing film at the global box office is Avengers: Endgame (USA, 2019), which has a worldwide lifetime gross of $2,790,216,193 (£2,230,280,000) as of 21 July 2019, according to The Numbers.com.
