My name is Bruce Jensen.
0:02
My mother grew up in Alton, Illinois,
0:05
and all her family lived there. And she
0:08
met and knew Robert Wadllo, the world's
0:12
tallest man.
0:16
Alton is a small town, maybe 20,000
0:20
people, something like that.
0:22
My grandfather Maurice Williamson loved
0:26
uh new technology and in the 1920s
0:28
bought himself a movie camera and a
0:31
projector and started filming uh all
0:33
sorts of occasions
0:35
and he knew a lot of people as a doctor
0:39
including the Wadlo family. So I think
0:42
that he arranged this meeting between my
0:45
mother and Robert because they have the
0:48
same birthday February 22nd. She was
0:50
born in 1929. He was born in 1918.
0:55
But so he was turning 15, she was
0:57
turning four.
1:00
There's the rest of Robert.
1:06
They walk down the steps together
1:10
and have a lovely handshake.
1:17
And she cranes her head to look up at
1:19
Robert and he picks her up.
1:26
And this is my favorite part. She starts
1:28
to walk away and then she stops and she
1:32
reaches back
1:34
for Robert's hand
1:37
and they walk together.
1:39
I love that part.

1:43
So, not only did Robert have a
1:45
relationship with my mother and my
1:48
grandfather,
1:49
but I found I just a few days ago found
1:53
this long lost photo of Robert with my
1:57
great aunt Bernice.
2:00
She was his high school art teacher. She
2:04
actually had a master's degree from
2:06
Columbia University and then came back
2:09
to Alton, Illinois to teach art
2:13
and for her entire career. So, she was
2:16
there not only through all of Robert's
2:19
schooling, but for all of Robert's
2:21
siblings and for my mother as well. She
2:25
was there the whole time teaching
2:26
teaching art.
2:30
Well, I I think it's fascinating that I
2:32
had so much family in Alton, Illinois.
2:35
And I think part of why he became so
2:38
iconic was the way he lived his life
2:41
with so much dignity. Barnaman Bailey
2:44
wanted him to be, you know, travel with
2:45
the circus and uh, you know, but he
2:48
insisted on wearing a suit and I think
2:51
he tried it for a while, but he did it
2:53
in a dignified manner. And I think
2:54
that's the way he carried himself and
2:57
presented himself and how, you know,
2:59
friendly he was, as you can see in the
3:02
video with my mom. Um, I think that's
3:06
partly or has a lot to do with why he
3:09
became so iconic.
3:12
It's interesting. Our son Kevin, I'm
3:15
only 5'11 or I was most of my life. I
3:17
think I'm shorter now. So, Robert Wadla
3:19
was more than 3 feet taller than I am
3:22
now, which is really hard to imagine.
3:25
But our son Kevin is 6'7. And so, he
3:28
sticks out also, and people feel like
3:30
they have a license to to comment on
3:33
that.
3:35
People that he doesn't know all the time
3:37
comment on how tall he is. So, but he
3:40
was more than two feet shorter than
3:42
Robert Wadlow. And I have really a hard
3:45
time imagining what that must have been
3:47
like for Robert to I mean, people must
3:51
have gawkked at at Robert all the time.
3:54
And you know, what was that like? It's
3:57
really It's a little hard to put your uh
4:00
feet in his shoes,
4:02
but um I think he got a lot of support
4:05
from the people in in Alton.
4:09
They I think they they loved him and
4:12
thought of him as, you know, their
4:14
hometown boy.
