Atasun Optik had no idea the gold mine of an idea it was sitting on.

After a recent ad campaign of the Turkish optical brand proved successful in asking people to take selfies with their Atasun Optik sunglasses, the company decided to try and aim higher. As such, sights were set on the largest online photo album of self-portrait photographs. Or, as they're better known, selfies.

The nation's optical retail industry market leader spent months asking fans and consumers to upload selfies to the same online album while wearing their Atasun Optik shades, and in the end collected 103,690 unique, qualifying submissions.

The entire album is visible on the Turkish website here.

The selfies counted hit 100,000 - the number required to establish the record - at Marmara Forum in Istanbul, at an event created specifically to commemorate the record-breaking achievement.

Vine posts made at the ceremony were looped a combined 605,000 times, while nearly 2,000 spectators attended the live event. Facebook ads created by Atasun Optik in the week leading up to the event reached 2.4 million impressions. And total traffic in unique visitors to the Atasun Optik website increased by 30% week-on-week leading up to the Guinness World Records certficiation.
