Michael Phelps, increased his legendary sporting status within the field of swimming by securing his 21st Olympic career gold.
Following on from helping his team win the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay at the Olympic Aquatics Center in Rio on Sunday, the American swimming superstar bagged another pair of medals last night with an astonishing win in the 200 metres butterfly and an equally accomplished leg for the US in their 4x200m freestyle relay victory.
"The Baltimore Bullet" took home six gold medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, a record-shattering eight golds at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and four gold medals at the 2012 Olympics in London where he won his final race before retirement – the 4 x 100 m medley relay at the Aquatics Centre on 4 August 2012.
Michael came back out of retirement in April 2014 and qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics, where he has already improved his records for the Most Olympic medals won, Most gold medals won at the Olympics (male) and Most medals won at the Olympics for swimming (male), with his total career tally now standing at 25.
The 31-year-old swimmer is hoping to win even more medals at Rio 2016, where his upcoming races include the 100 metre butterfly and the 22 metre medley. Stay tuned to find out if Phelps can take his records even further.
