Behind the world’s tallest hotel: Interview with CEO Rob Burns

Dubai's skyline isn't exactly an easy place to stand out.

It's home to some of the world's tallest, boldest and most recognizable buildings, in a city where architectural ambition has become part of its identity.

So, when a new tower earns its place among them and a Guinness World Records title along the way, there's a story worth telling.

Rising 377.127 metres above Dubai Marina, with 1,004 rooms across 82 floors, Ciel Dubai Marina, Vignette Collection by IHG, is officially the world's tallest hotel.

But long before the measurements were verified and the record confirmed, Ciel Dubai Marina was an ambitious idea on paper.

We spoke with Rob Burns, CEO of The First Group, about the journey behind the record, the people who made it happen and what it feels like to see a project become part of one of the world's most famous skylines.

When you first saw Ciel Dubai Marina taking shape, did you realize you were looking at history in the making?

Rob Burns: " We always knew Ciel Dubai Marina, Vignette Collection by IHG, had the potential to be something extraordinary. However, it was only when the tower began to take its place on the Dubai skyline that the true scale of what we were creating became apparent. At that point, it felt like more than a development project — it felt like a landmark in the making and an important new chapter in Dubai’s architectural story."

What does this achievement say about the ambition of The First Group and the team behind Ciel Dubai Marina?

Rob Burns: "It demonstrates that our ambition is matched by our ability to execute. Many organizations can conceive a bold idea, but bringing a project of this scale and complexity to life requires long-term conviction, technical excellence, resilience and exceptional collaboration. This record belongs to the entire team behind Ciel Dubai Marina, from the architects, engineers and construction specialists to our consultants, partners and hospitality teams. What was the most challenging part of achieving this record?

Rob Burns: "The greatest challenge was transforming an ambitious architectural vision into a fully operational, world-class hotel at an unprecedented height. That required an extraordinary level of coordination across design, engineering, construction and hospitality operations. Every element had to work together while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and guest experience. The record was never pursued at the expense of those fundamentals; it was achieved because the entire team remained committed to them throughout the journey."

How does it feel to know that Ciel Dubai Marina is now an iconic part of Dubai's skyline for generations to come?

Rob Burns: "It is an immense source of pride, but it is also very humbling. Dubai’s skyline is recognized around the world as a symbol of progress, ambition and possibility. To know that Ciel Dubai Marina now has a permanent place within it is an extraordinary privilege. Our hope is that future generations will see Ciel Dubai Marina not only as the world’s tallest hotel but as a destination that reflects the spirit of Dubai and the standards of hospitality for which the city is known.’’

If you had to describe Ciel Dubai Marina in three words to someone who has never seen it, what would they be?

Rob Burns: "Bold. Distinctive. Multidimensional."

A Guinness World Records title can mark the end of an extraordinary journey.

But sometimes, it's the moment that opens the door to something even bigger.

For The First Group, we wanted to know which one this was.

Do you see this record as the destination, or as the beginning of a new chapter for The First Group?

Rob Burns: "It is unquestionably the beginning of a new chapter. The Guinness World Records title is a tremendous validation of what our team has accomplished, but a building’s height alone does not define its legacy. The attention may come from the record, but the reputation will be built through the experiences we deliver to our guests. Ciel Dubai Marina provides a powerful platform from which The First Group can continue expanding its hospitality capabilities, strengthening its partnerships and accelerating its growth across international markets, bringing its distinctive approach to hospitality to new destinations around the world."

Perhaps that's the fitting place to end our conversation.

Because in a city known for asking "what's next?", becoming the world's tallest hotel was never going to be only about reaching the highest point.

For Ciel Dubai Marina, the record has put a number on an extraordinary achievement. What comes next will determine the legacy behind it.
