When it comes to a party… you can never have enough guacamole!

Yet the city of Tancítaro in Michoacán, Mexico is really taking that to the extreme – and during this year’s Avocado Festival (Feria del Aguacate), chefs from the “Avocado Capital of the World” (Capital Mundial del Aguacate) pulled out a dip with some record-breaking proportions.

Housed in a container the size of a jacuzzi, and weighing more than a full-grown elephant, these hardworking volunteers assembled a gigantic vat of avocados and spices weighing an impressive 14,992.53 lbs (6,800.5 kg), and taking the title for the largest serving of guacamole in the world!

More than 800 cooks worked incredibly efficiently for a total of two and a half hours to create the delicious snack, which is known to brown quickly when exposed to air.

Luckily, these volunteers from Tancítaro are used to preparing avocados, as the fruit is one of the region’s largest exports – and they quickly mixed the green flesh with healthy amounts of locally sourced tomato, onion, lime, and cilantro to make the iconic dish.

The attempt took place on 10 April, during the city’s 13th annual “Feria del Aguacate”.

This gastronomic celebration is a key event in the region, used to promote tourism and strengthen the economy. Each year, thousands of visitors attend to experience the cultural activities, tastings, and exhibitions that highlight the richness of Michoacán’s regional flavours – particularly the avocado.

“This record proudly showcases Mexican cultural identity to the world,” said Guinness World Records Adjudicator Susana Reyes, who oversaw the event.

“And I have no doubt it will leave many wishing they could taste a guacamole like this!”

Once the mixture was finally prepared, the guacamole was officially weighed – and everyone present cheered as it was announced that their dish had taken the record!

Tancítaro’s creation clocked in at 14,992.53 lbs (6,800.5 kg), which was roughly 4,000 lbs (1,814.4 kg) heavier than the previous record holders in the Municipio de Peribán, their neighbours in the Michoacán region.

And of course you’re wondering – what did they do with that gigantic amount of guac?

Naturally, it was distributed to everyone gathered at the festival… and since the attempt was completed with so much passion and hard work, we’re sure it tasted absolutely delicious.
