Airbnb kicks off World Cup festivities in Houston with the longest line of soccer balls
Playing a game of soccer only requires one ball – yet when you’re trying to grow the sport, it’s best to bring some extras!

This logic was what brought Airbnb to the fields of Hermann Park in Houston, Texas, USA on Saturday 11 April, as they hosted a record-breaking attempt for the longest line of footballs (soccer balls) in the world.

In preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026TM, the company made its largest investment into the Houston community yet, giving more than $1 million (£736,245) through the Airbnb Host City Impact Program.
And to celebrate the development of these projects, including Houston 26’s brand-new Green Corridor and the Grow the Game initiative, the city joined Airbnb and Guinness World Records for this incredible event – which delivered a total of 1,036 balls to youths in Houston, taken straight from the longest line of footballs on Earth!

“Today’s event is about more than breaking a world record, it’s about celebrating Houston and investing in its future,” said Laura Spanjian, Airbnb’s Head of Global Public Policy.
“As the world prepares to come to Houston for the FIFA World Cup 2026, we’re proud to support programs that ensure local communities, especially young people, can be part of that moment in a meaningful and lasting way.”

The event took place on a cloudy Saturday along the city’s Green Corridor, at a public park in Houston. Airbnb announced in December that they would be investing in developing this route between World Cup sites, and they thought this venue would be the perfect place to demonstrate their commitment to this project.

Hundreds of families showed up to arrange the line of balls in a zig-zag pattern alongside local youth players from leagues and non-profit organizations across Houston – and they were all cheered on by soccer star DaMarcus Beasley, Houston native and artist Bun B, and Houston-area elected officials.

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Sarah Casson was also in attendance to make sure that all attempt guidelines were being met, and she remarked that all the children at the event were particularly excited to take part in something of this magnitude.
“This demonstrated the magic of record breaking, bringing a city together for a good cause,” she said.

After all the soccer balls were counted, and Houston and Airbnb were officially confirmed as the record holder, each child was able to take home one of the balls – with the remainder being donated to Grow the Game, a collaboration between the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority Foundation.
“Houston is showing the world what it means to come together as a community,” said Chris Canetti, President of FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee, to Airbnb. “With local youth leading the way, this moment reflects the energy, diversity, and spirit that will define Houston’s role as a host city in 2026.”
The day also served as an engaging way to raise spirits on American soil for the upcoming tournament, which begins on 11 June with a match in Mexico City.

“Here in H-town we excel at everything we do, including world records!” said the event organizers. “This was a great way to bring the community together and kick off the World Cup season.”

So congratulations to everyone that took part in this incredible World Cup attempt – you are all Officially Amazing!
