The racecars were electric, and the crowd was too, at Mexico City’s Formula E race last month November – thanks to a record-breaking artistic endeavour by the car company Cupra.

To garner awareness for Cupra México’s brand, and to showcase the aesthetic side of body painting (whether that be for cars, or for people), the company invited hundreds of participants to the track at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico this 10 January to take part in the Guinness World Records attempt for the largest gathering of body painted people.

An impressive total of 498 participants showed up to be painted, allowing Cupra México to take home the title – while their fans entered the racetrack excited to represent the brand literally on their skin.

“Performance isn’t just about speed – it’s about impact,” the company said on social media after the attempt. And we certainly agree!

On the day of the event, over 500 attendees showed up to the E-Prix early, excited to have the chance to be decorated by some of Cupra’s talented body artists.

In order to qualify for the record, all attendees had to be doused in a professional-standard body paint, with a minimum coverage of 30% of the body – so lines were formed outside to give the painters enough time to complete their work.

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Susana Reyes was also present to make sure that all the event guidelines were being followed, and she aided stewards and independent witnesses in counting each of the finished guests.

Before long, a giant group of painted people began to form, each of them excited to be able to show off the matte-black ink, futuristic designs, and the sleek markings that represent the Cupra brand.

“The participants’ involvement and the artists’ dedication made this attempt an exciting exploration of the creative and artistic potential of a record of this kind,” said Susana.

And beyond the numerical achievement, the event clearly demonstrated how artistic expression, design, and coordination can play a central role in record-breaking attempts.

After all the participants were officially counted, and it was clear that Cupra had taken the crown, everyone was free to enter the race track to watch the electric vehicles compete for the prize.

The Cupra Kiro team even scored its first Formula E points during the race, adding further significance to the overall event day!
