Dressed in their finest clothing, a grand total of 3,618 people turned up to the event at this year’s ArtPrize, waiting to be stunned by the floral-inspired works of local atelier RC Caylan at the culmination of the weekslong celebration.

Beyond the dozens of well-dressed models, the crowd at the international art competition was filled with talented faces – including celebrities such as Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston – with all the sparkles and spectacles concluding in the organization’s record-breaking attempt.

Following a dramatic runway show featuring tons of bright colours and striking shapes, the designer and organizers took to the stage to accept the title from Guinness World Records Adjudicator Chloe McCarthy.

They officially beat the record of 3,131 set by Priya Mohit Gadhiya and Raja Rani Coaching Pvt Ltd (both India) in Surat last year, to the delight of the audience and everyone who performed.

ArtPrize has roots back to 2009, and was created as a way to showcase the experience of high art to people for free, in a way that is inclusive, welcoming, and friendly.

They welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, transforming Grand Rapids into a visual canvas featuring a massive, city-wide art gallery.

Adjudicator Chloe, who grew up in Michigan, described it as almost like an art crawl – where visitors can walk the streets and pass by giant installations, paintings, sculptures, drawings, live performances, and interactive exhibits. Each person can vote on their favourite entries, with the winners receiving grant and prize money, turning this into a true community event.

Each year, ArtPrize has a different theme – and this year’s 3 October performance was appropriately labelled “fashion”.

In addition to the dynamic show itself, RC Caylan invited live ballet, symphony, and opera performers to accompany his works down the runway, providing a multi-faceted artistic experience for everyone gathered at the attempt.

While towering models strutted down the bright-white runway, swirling their dresses (and even swishing their capes!), the live musicians set the scene with the stunning sounds of stringed instruments and twirls from twisting ballerinas.
