Spiral staircase that's as beautiful as the artwork it leads to claims world record

Located in the OneM Center for Contemporary Art in Guangzhou, China, is a record-breaking staircase that’s as beautiful as the artwork on display inside.

Dubbed the Ribbon of Pearl River, it was officially named the record holder for tallest sectional height of an unsupported spiral staircase today.

Shaped like a red ribbon, the staircase in the Pazhou E-Commerce Headquarters Hub leads up to a stunning river view and a vantage point of the breathtaking city skyline of Haizhu District.

The red-coloured steel spiral staircase is 31.342 metres (102.8 ft) high with a total length of 186.315 m (611.2 ft) and a diameter of 13.6 m (44.6 ft). The sectional height of the unsupported part is 11.995 m (39.3 ft), which is measured by the height between a section of the unsupported spiral staircase without newel (aka a central pole) and the perimeter support of surrounding structure or walls.

The entire staircase looks like an artistic and eye-catching scarlet ribbon, ascending from the underground level to upper levels through multiple floors, connecting the commercial space to city skyline views.

At a ceremony, dancers in scarlet dresses were seen dancing on the staircase, echoing the beautiful architectural curves with their immersive performances. A Guinness World Records Adjudicator was also there to announce that the Ribbon of Pearl River spiral staircase had successfully created a new record for the tallest sectional height of an unsupported spiral staircase.

The Guangzhou urban Planning & Design Research Institute Co. Ltd. (GZPI) claimed that the staircase's support span and helix angle both exceed conventional engineering standards, achieving dual breakthroughs in structural innovation and spatial aesthetics.

"This scarlet spiral staircase at the OneM Center for Contemporary Art transcends structural function. It is a public artwork accessible to all, destined to become Pazhou CBD's cultural landmark and Guangzhou's premier brand showcase," declared the event organizer.
