St Stephen's School achieves the record for most people launching confetti cannons simultaneously

Kicking off their 40th anniversary with a ‘bang’, St Stephen’s School has broken the record for most people launching confetti cannons simultaneously in Perth, Australia.

Taking place on the sunny greens of the school, 2,013 people consisting of students and faculty members came together to set off confetti cannons.

This beat the previous record of 1,116 set by Attendees of the IAAPA Opening Ceremony (multiple nationalities) in Orlando, Florida, USA, on 15 November 2022.

St Stephen’s School is an independent school of the Uniting Church for pre-kindergarten to Year 12.

The school wanted to bring their two campuses together and foster a sense of school community with this record.

Not only was the record key for uniting the faculty and students, but the organizers also wanted to create a positive and unforgettable memory for the students.

Guinness World Records, like the school, represents generations so both teachers and students felt that they were accomplishing something truly special.

The record-breaking event took a full year of planning! Unfortunately, the original date had to be postponed due to extreme weather.

From searching for environmentally friendly biodegradable confetti to co-ordinating the over 2,000 students taking part, everyone had a part to play.

The attempt started bright and early at 5 a.m. to set the area up.

Once the students arrived at 9:30 a.m., they were briefed on the guidelines and given numbered wristbands.

To celebrate the special anniversary, students stood in a ‘40’ shape. This was done by marking the number 40 out with spray paint on the grounds.

Just as the official attempt was about to begin, a teacher accidentally let off their canon early. This immediately drew hurried exclamations from the students to say that "it was a teacher"!

Another student joked that he didn’t want the confetti "to get stuck in his hair".

The final countdown was done by the Head of the Carramar Campus and with this, the air exploded in red, white and blue confetti.

There were 16 disqualifications, but this didn’t deter the attempt from being successful.

Once the record was confirmed, Guinness World Records Adjudicator Marc Cote presented the certificate.

We were looking for a unique way to celebrate our 40th anniversary, something that our students would remember for the rest of their lives. We wanted everyone from our youngest students who are three years old to our 18-year-old year 12s to be involved and to be excited, attempting a Guinness World Records title just seemed like the perfect fit. We’ve loved how this event has brought our whole community together and not just current parents and students. Today has really demonstrated the sense of family and connection that our community feels.– Donella Beare, Principal

St Stephen’s School may have a hard time beating this celebration in years to come as staff are already being asked what’s in store for their 50th anniversary!
