Enormous origami artworks in Philippines set world records

Two co-living properties of a global hospitality brand opened in the Philippines marked their first anniversary with two amazing origami records.
The first is the largest display of origami sharks, set by lyf Cebu City; the other is the largest display of origami stars, set by lyf Malate Manila.
lyf (pronounced "life") is a dynamic, experience-led hospitality concept by Ascott that provides co-living spaces for digital nomads, technopreneurs, creatives and self-starters to “live your freedom” in a dynamic environment. lyf has 26 properties in 11 countries, and lyf Cebu City and lyf Malate Manila recently marked their first anniversary.
They kicked off their celebrations on 29 August at lyf Cebu City with a magnificent display of a Thresher shark, consisting of 12,749 origami sharks - all skilfully hand folded by the property's colleagues and their families, the local community, and guests.
It took approximately 12 weeks to fold enough origami to create the display.
The result? A playful artwork that does not only get our "Officially Amazing" accolade, but also makes the space feel like you're swimming with the sharks!
The shark theme was chosen in celebration of the island's unique biodiversity, as well as to raise awareness about the pelagic thresher sharks that live in the oceans around Cebu, which are now an endangered species.
On the following day, lyf Malate Manila continued the celebration with a star-themed event celebrating the nation and its people, during which a spectacular artwork using 100,000 origami stars were displayed.
The art piece was a collaborative effort that took one month to accomplish and was only possible thanks to the incredible community of the co-living, hospitality brand.
The record-breaking artwork features four large stars, which consist of smaller stars of various colours and sizes, just like the stars that light up our skies.
The two origami displays were kept on display until 30 September, before being handed to Junknot, a Filipino social enterprise that will upcycle them into innovative and artistic furniture to be displayed in the property.
Congratulations lyf Malate Manila and lyf Cebu City, you’re Officially Amazing!
