World’s largest arancino fed hundreds of people after being unveiled in Italy
Family-run business D&D S.R.L. "PANYLLO" has created the world's largest arancino.
The arancino weighed an astonishing 56.20 kg (123 lb 14 oz) - just a little less than the average adult female - when first unveiled in Messina, Italy.
This is a new record with the minimum to beat being 32.72 kg (72.14 lb).
An arancino is a traditional Italian rice ball that is stuffed, coated with breadcrumbs and deep-fried. It is considered a staple of Sicilian cuisine.
D&D S.R.L. was founded in 2010 and produces typical Messina and Sicilian local products, cooking up fresh Italian delicacies daily.
The bakery wanted to attempt this record to recognize Messina and its contributions to the food industry.
For this gigantic task, a series of different combinations of ingredients and procedures were trialled to get a perfect arancino.
Going further, a large steel support was specially created and acted as a support to fry it.
The arancino was created by first making a traditional ragu, then the rice was cooked.
These two ingredients acted as a foundation on the plate, and the ragu sauce was gradually added to make sure everything was compact.
Carefully, the sauce and the rice was increased each time until the steel was completely covered to the top.
Once formed and compacted, the arancino was put in the fridge and once set, was sprinkled with a batter of water and flour, before finally being breaded with breadcrumbs.
This process took a total of six hours!
It was then time to unveil the arancino.
This took place in the lively square of Messina in Piazza Duomo, noted by the record holders as the most evocative square in the city.
The arancino was transported to the square via a refrigerated van where it was unloaded in front of eager spectators.
It took two hours to bring the oil to a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F) and it was finally submerged into the oil cooking for a further 40 minutes.
All of this was witnessed by Guinness World Records Adjudicator Lorenzo Veltri who awarded them with the Guinness World Records certificate.
The arancino was then donated to a volunteer association of the Antoniano institute
D & D S.R.L hope that this record will increase the visibility of Messina and Sicilian food.
