camp-bestival-break-largest-disco-dance-record

Camp Besitval (UK) have broken the record for the largest disco dance with 598 festival-goers taking part on 30 July 2022.

Camp Bestival is a British music festival dubbed the "little sister" of the main Bestival festival, targeted to families and small children, and is held annually at Lulworth Castle in Dorset.

People attending the festival were able to apply to take part in the attempt by signing up on the Camp Bestival website.

Before entry, a counting system was put in place to verify the amount of participants taking part.

Each participant was given a special limited edition sequin cape before the official attempt began at 12pm.

The official dance took place to the soundtrack of Sister Sledge’s disco anthem "We Are Family". Participants were led by Diverse City founder and disco champion Claire Hodgson MBE, and the number was choreographed by fellow disco campion, and Claire's brother, Tom Hodgson.

In the run-up to the attempt, rehearsal workshops were available throughout the festival to help people learn the official dance, as well as step-by-step video tutorials shared in advance.

The event was hosted by pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor known for her dance anthem "Murder on the Dancefloor" to give the crowd much needed motivation.

With all participants in place and appropriately dressed with sequins and glitter it was time to boogie in front of the world's largest disco ball.

This super-sized mirrored ball measures 10.33 m (33 ft 10 in) was created for Bestival 2014's Desert Island Disco at Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight.

For the attempt to be valid, participants had to dance for a full five minutes.

The attempt was successful with 598 participants taking part, comfortably beating the previous record of 324 achieved by Universal Pictures in 2018.

Camp Bestival also used the event to raise money for their charity partner, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which inspires young people age 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer.

"Camp Bestival Dorset festival goers are record breakers! We are thrilled to have broken the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest Disco Dance in true Camp Bestival style. It was amazing to see families and people of all ages come together and show off their best disco moves under the dazzling glitter ball. As well as having a huge amount of fun, we’re incredibly proud that the attempt has raised funds for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Huge congratulations to all dancers involved!" - Rob da Bank, Camp Bestival curator

Congratulations to everyone involved!
