Nissan have achieved a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for largest glow-in-the-dark painting by using the tyres of a Nissan LEAF car as a paintbrush across the surface of a giant 207.68 m² (681.36 ft²) PVC coated canvas. The self-portrait of the electric car required more than 60 litres of luminous acrylic paint and took over 61 hours to create in a pitch black hangar at Lasham Airfield in Hampshire (UK) on 20th March 2015.

Nissan approached Guinness World Records to raise awareness for its pioneering line of electric vehicles, including the Nissan LEAF, the world's most popular electric vehicle.

The mammoth painting, depicting the front of a Nissan LEAF, was created by maverick motoring artist, Ian Cook and his company Popbangcolour. Usually seen creating paintings using radio-controlled cars at motoring-related events, Ian enthusiastically accepted the challenge to to work on this super-sized record attempt project, using the full-size Nissan LEAF to spread strategically placed pools of glow-in-the-dark paint across the canvas with its tyres to create the image.

“This has been one of the most challenging paintings I’ve ever been asked to create – but it looks fantastic!” said artist Ian Cook.

The pioneering finish applied to the Nissan LEAF absorbs UV energy and other visible radiation during daylight hours and glows for between eight and ten hours after dawn; making it the ideal material for the first ever glow-in-the-dark car paint.
