Last week saw thousands of people take part in the UAE’s inaugural National Sports Day, and it turned out to be a record-breaking occasion with one event organised by UAE JJF, ADEC and Palms Sport (all UAE) earning a Guinness World Records title for the Largest jujutsu (jiu-jitsu) lesson ever.

An incredible 2,481 participants came together at the ADNEC in Abu Dhabi to practise the Japanese martial art and become record breakers.

Jujutsu is a method of close combat for defeating an armoured opponent in which one uses no weapon or only a short weapon.

The enormous class was led by fully qualified instructors, with everyone involved dressed in the official training uniform (Keikogi) and equipped with all the appropriate kit (such as a mouth guard, head gear and a mat).

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Mr P. Patel was on hand to verify the attempt and announce its resounding success to the thrilled super-sized class.

This event was just one of 100 different celebrations that were hosted in the capital (and a further 200 over UAE) as various sports organisations, schools and companies celebrated the first National Sports Day as part of an inspirational effort to bring people of all ages and nationalities together through sport.
