A Cuban fitness trainer has claimed an incredible Guinness World Records title for the heaviest weighted hip thrust (female) after lifting roughly the heft of a piano with just her legs.

Lilian “Lilita” M. Zamora Alonso, who now resides in Miami, Florida, USA, accomplished this record at Miami Iron Gym on 27 March after weeks of training and preparation.

Surrounded by a group of witnesses, loved ones, and fellow fitness coaches, she hoisted a mind-boggling total of 639 lbs (289.90 kg) attached to a silver barbell – heavy-breathing and sweating through the effort, but nonetheless achieving a historic athletic feat for women around the world.

She broke a title held by American Kaitlyn Callo since 2024, who lifted 605 lbs (274.42 kg) in San Francisco, California on 29 August.

“I’ve been training for almost 10 years. I’ve gone through so many phases, I’ve changed physically and mentally, I’ve turned fitness into my profession and a huge part of who I am… but I never imagined that one day my name would be accompanied by the words ‘Guinness World Records title holder,’” said Lilita on Instagram after the attempt.

“And perhaps the most beautiful thing of all is that I don’t feel like this is the culmination of my journey. I feel like it’s the beginning of something much bigger.”

Across her social media, Lilita diligently documented her training routine for the title, telling her followers in Spanish all about her diet, fitness regime, and preparation process in the weeks and months leading up to the event.

Hip thrusts typically target the glute muscles, and to reach a record-setting amount Lilita ended up abandoning her typical routine of 8-12 reps per session to focus on maximum weight training.

In one video, she captured shots of her gradually increasing the weight of her hip thrusts from 135 lbs (61 kg) to 635 lbs (288 kg), a point which she was happy to achieve but needed to surpass if she wanted to comfortably take the title.

Yet finally, on 27 March, Lilita was ready to attempt the record – and she invited a small group out to her gym in Miami to watch her make history.

Admitting that she was more nervous than she looked, Lilita set up her station near the bench, and racked up 639 lbs (289.90 kg) of weights on the barbell.

Cheered on by her husband, friends, and fellow fitness-lovers, she took a few deep breaths to calm her body, before finally gripping her hands on to the bar and giving a giant tug.

And with the strength of a superhero, Lilita hoisted the bar squarely above her hip – leaving it suspended for a few fateful seconds before exhaling a deep breath and letting it drop to the floor.

Her loved ones gave her a giant cheer, and over the next few weeks and months Lilita accepted praise and congratulations from the media and her followers around the world.

“[There was] no second chance for this moment,” she said later. “No chance to correct anything afterward. Just me, the barbell, and all the hard work that had brought me this far.”

And we’re so pleased it all worked out.
