Bearbricks collector breaks record after obtaining nearly 3,500 versions of designer toy
What started out as a hobby has turned into a Guinness World Records title for diehard Bearbricks fan Daniel Park (USA), who amassed an incredible total of 3,482 pieces of merchandise from the popular collectable brand.

This March, the proud record holder – who goes by the name BrickChicago on social media – claimed the title for the largest collection of Bearbrick bears with his massive shelves of colourfully painted plastic figurines.
Five years ago, he started his journey with a single blind box reveal – and since that fateful day he has been carefully curating his home office into a figurative museum dedicated to the bears’ iconic silhouette.
Bearbricks were first created in 2001 by Tatsuhiko Akashi (Japan), the founder of the toy company Medicom. Akashi was tasked with designing a gift to hand out to participants at the 2001 World Character Convention in Tokyo, and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the teddy bear, he swapped the heads of his toys with the iconic bear head – birthing a new breed of collectable items that contain all different colours and designs.
Today, the Bearbricks lay at the intersection of toy and art, as each semiannual drop features sought-after decorations made by various celebrities, artists, designers, and musicians.
In fact, the original Bearbricks collection record was initially taken back in 2020 by Chinese collector Gao Ke, but his grouping of 1,008 bears was dominantly overthrown by Daniel’s 3,482.

“What captivated me then, and continues to drive me now, is the brilliance of the standard platform,” said Daniel to GWR. “It is a remarkable canvas that allows for infinite creative expression, while maintaining a consistent, iconic silhouette.”

Daniel told us that he was inspired to take on the title after flipping through Guinness World Records with his eight-year-old daughter, when she asked what was the record for a Bearbricks collection.
“I wanted to prove to her that with enough passion, effort, and discipline, you can turn a personal hobby into a world-class achievement,” he said.
And even though the verification process was time-consuming, he was proud to be able to take home the crown to his family.
“While the work was tedious, it was a labor of love that I am incredibly proud to showcase to my daughter and the global collecting community,” Daniel remarked.
He also added that the versatility of the Bearbricks’ design universally appealed to everyone in his household, which allows them to relate to his collecting mission.
“In my home, there is a design for everyone,” said Daniel. “My [other] kids are drawn to the superhero themes like Batman and Superman, while my daughter finds joy in classics like Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, and the Ninja Turtles.”

Yet for Daniel in particular, the appeal of Bearbricks is how they incorporate streetwear with fine art.
The local to Palatine, Illinois loves how he is able to decorate his home with bear-shaped designs based on the brand’s collaborations with legendary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring.

“My collection proudly features… museum-quality aesthetics into a tangible form,” he said.
He also has hundreds of bears that reference pop culture or modern history, such as: basketball players like Lebron James, movie characters like ET or Jason from Friday the 13th, and culture figures like the Japanese beckoning cat.

And beyond the standard figurines, Daniel also keeps larger Bearbricks – scaled up to 400% and 1,000% – to serve as pieces of interior decor in his house.
“Curating this collection within my home office has transformed my workspace into a gallery of inspiration,” he said. “Surrounding myself with these designs brings me immense joy every single day.”

So congratulations, Daniel – you and your Bearbricks are Officially Amazing!
