American man on skis whizzes over 60 mph across asphalt to concretely break record
Yeah… this one isn’t street legal.

Alongside a group of daring friends, repeat-record breaker Johnny Cruz Buckingham (USA) took on the record for the fastest towed asphalt skiing last August, by strapping on a pair of skis and letting himself be yanked across a parking lot at over 60 mph behind a moving car.
Dressed in a yellow riding suit, Johnny was pulled along a pre-measured flat track at increasing speeds, until he eventually flew past a witness holding a radar gun. At the end of the route, he’d release the handle attached to the rope, and safely skid off to the side – before repeating the process until he was confident in his abilities.

Finally, after a few practice attempts, he achieved his record-setting run, zooming past the speed gun at a blistering 69 mph (111.04 km/h)!
Despite the risks, if anyone would be capable of a stunt like this, it’d be Johnny – who also goes by “MrWorldRecords”.
The former US Air Force pilot already has over a dozen records to his name – such as the most fire knife spins in 30 seconds and the fastest time to travel to all seven continents – and he wanted to take on this title in particular to show his son that anything is possible.
“I want to inspire my child, Hurricane Thomas Buckingham, to set big goals and reach for the stars,” he said. “This record is for you, Champ!”

In fact, since his August record, Johnny has broken five more titles, including: the most fire knife spins on a balance board in one minute (104), the most catches of a medicine ball wearing boxing gloves by a pair in one minute (32), the fastest time to burst 100 balloons with the feet (19.78 seconds), the fastest time to travel to all New York City Ferry stops (6:59:20), and the aforementioned fire knife record.

Yet surprisingly, this asphalt skiing record is not the only title to involve skiing on unfamiliar terrains.
Last year, Mahé Freydier (France) burned a hole in his skis while setting the record for the fastest sand skiing, after flying down the sand dunes of Toro Mata, Acarí, Peru at 75 mph (121 km/h).
And in 2024, skier Joshua Bregman (UK) mastered the air during the highest altitude ski-BASE jump in Nepal, by hurtling off the side of a mountain with his parachute to land a leap of 18,753 ft (5,716 m).
So who knows which amazing record Johnny will try and take on next?

Congratulations, Johnny – you are Officially Amazing!
