Back in 1944, the term “vegan” was coined, and World Vegan Day was celebrated for the very first time.

Fast forward to now, an estimated 88 million people all over the world identify as vegan.

This way of living offers many benefits to us, our planet and the animals we live alongside.

Following a plant-based diet can prevent the exploitation of animals, lower our carbon footprint, and lessen the risk of health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Largest vegan burger

This bread bun filled with a plant-based patty, tomatoes, lettuce and vegan mayonnaise weighed in at 213.4 kg (470 lb 7.5 oz).

That’s equivalent to two adult giant pandas!

The burger was prepared by Unilever Food Solutions Greece in Athens on 27 September 2024.

It shattered the previous record of 162.5 kg (358 lb 4 oz), set by Irish food producers, Finnebrogue Artisan, in 2021.

After the attempt was deemed successful, the dish was chopped up and given mostly to homeless people in the city.

Largest vegan cake

We’ve had our main and now it’s time for dessert…

Swedish social media star Therese Lindgren baked the largest vegan cake in Stockholm on 3 November 2017.

It measured 462.4 kg (1,019 lb 6 oz), akin to a concert grand piano!

Therese hoped the cake would create awareness about veganism and encourage people to think about their food choices, health and values.

The recipe included 62.3 kg (137 lb 5 oz) of semolina, 76.54 kg (168 lb 11 oz) of icing sugar and 35.6 kg (78 lb 7 oz) of strawberries.

The menu consisted of hot dogs, merguez (spicy red sausages) and chipolatas.

HappyVore described the atmosphere as “absolutely electric”.

Most vegan nuggets eaten in one minute

Leah Shutkever (UK) gobbled 350 g (12.34 oz) of vegan nuggies at GWR HQ in London on 3 August 2023.

This is comparable to the weight of an unopened can of soup.

When attempting this challenge, she went up against fellow record-setting speed-eater, Mike Jack (aka the “Vegan Vacuum”).

Leah currently boasts 26 GWR titles, making her one of our most prolific female record holders.

Some of her vegan-friendly titles include the most strawberries eaten in one minute (613 g; 1 lb 5 oz) and the fastest time to eat a head of lettuce (46.53 sec).
