Today is National Hugging Day, so grab your loved ones and give them a big old squeeze!

To celebrate, we’re looking back on this very wholesome attempt to set the record for most hugs in a minute by a pair.

Armed with the latest edition of Guinness World Records, our own Will Munford headed to London’s iconic Tower Bridge with Adjudicator Joanne Brent to challenge members of the public to break a world record.

And this couple were well up for giving it a go.

Introducing them, Will said: “Sometimes two talents, two prospects come along in record breaking out of nowhere… and their names are Ali and Dave.”

The UK-based couple admitted they were nervous before taking on their attempt.

But as soon as the clock started ticking, they set off, wrapping their arms around each other, dropping them to their sides, then returning to the embrace as many times as they could manage.

“These are two of the most experienced huggers we’ve ever had attempt this record,” Will said as he commentated on the action.

The couple said they hug more because they are both on their second relationship, but did all that love pay off for them on the day?

Joanne told them: “I can tell you now that your official result was 45 valid hugs. The current record, you’re not far off, they set at 138.”

“We’d never have done that,” Ali said, but she and Dave both laughed and said they’d had lots of fun attempting the record.

“We like to hold on to each other too long,” Dave said.

The record still belongs to US actor Anthony Anderson and singer Darius Rucker, who hugged each other 138 times in 60 seconds in 2019.
