Undertale, game that brought us record-breaking bop “MEGALOVANIA”, marks 10th anniversary

Ah, there you are! It’s still you. And given that you’re a brave and knowledgeable individual, you might already know that today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Undertale (Toby Fox, 2015). Let’s go one step further though, clever clogs: did you know that Undertale holds a Guinness World Records title?
“What World Record does Undertale possibly have?”, I hear you ask. Made mostly by one man, Undertale is a unique RPG where you play as a child who falls from our world into a giant subterranean realm of strange monsters.
Undertale is comparatively small as videogames go, but it has a devoted fanbase and achieved no small amount of cult success, partly because of the meta elements to its story, which features some characters breaking the fourth wall or showing awareness of the fact that they’re in a videogame.
Still, despite its longevity as a fan favourite, Undertale won’t be able to dethrone the likes of Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) as the most successful video game of all time, for example. But you’d be a fool to underestimate it!
Developer Toby Fox (USA) also composed the music for the game, a soundtrack that, in its totality, goes pretty hard. But one song in particular absolutely slaps, and it’s this track that’s earned Undertale and Fox the title of most streamed song from a videogame soundtrack on Spotify.
“MEGALOVANIA”, track 100 on the UNDERTALE Soundtrack (2015), had amassed 161,054,550 streams on Spotify as of 25 January 2024, when the record was last verified. That’s a whole lot of listening!
“MEGALOVANIA”, styled in all caps, is associated with Sans, a cheeky, chirpy, lovable skeleton who you meet several times on your adventures in Undertale. Depending on your choices in the game, though, you may end up having to fight him, and this instrumental plays during that altercation.
It’s a non-stop electronic bop that’s exceptionally fast paced, and layers drums, beeps and boops, and a very catchy central hook. It’s so popular that you might have already heard it without knowing where it came from, and it’s certainly worthy of its Guinness World Records title.

Of course, we’re not the only ones marking Undertale’s anniversary. A few weeks ago, the official Undertale website launched a new ‘memories’ section inviting fans to submit their favourite memories of the game.
It has now been announced that there’ll be a special Anniversary Stream Event on Twitch this weekend, over Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September.
If you’ve never played Undertale before, now might be the time to check it out and make some memories of your own. Maybe stick on “MEGALOVANIA” while you’re at it, and keep that world record going
