Axes, darts, cornhole bags… meet the Turkish man who can throw things FAR
Osman Gürcü from Denizli, Türkiye, has a very special talent for throwing!
His latest Guinness World Records title for the longest cornhole shot (blindfolded) (18 m / 59 ft) now takes his tally to 16, having previously achieved records including the farthest ping pong ball throw into a cup (13 m / 42 ft), farthest axe throw (56 m / 183 ft), and even the farthest throw of a rubber chicken (35 m / 114 ft).
You would usually see a casual game of cornhole being played at a backyard barbecue or tailgate party but the sport takes on a whole new level of difficulty when you can't even see the target. That wasn't to stop Osman though. What might seem near impossible to most was the product of Osman’s relentless training paired with fierce personal determination and a real knack for throwing things accurately and really, really far.
So how does someone train to become a master thrower? What inspired this unique pursuit?
We had the opportunity to talk to the man himself to learn more about his journey, the challenges, and what’s next.
GWR: When did you realize that you had a talent for throwing things?
Osman: My talent for throwing things goes all the way back to my childhood. I used to spend a lot of time on the basketball court and discovered that I had a natural ability to throw a basketball accurately, whether it was from far away, up close, backwards, sideways, or from any angle. That early fascination with precision and power evolved over time into a passion for throwing objects of all kinds.

GWR: What’s your favourite thing that you’ve thrown for a record attempt?
Osman: I really enjoy throwing a basketball because it offers multiple record possibilities - from long-distance throws to trick shots and timed challenges. I also love throwing axes and knives. There’s a unique satisfaction when they hit the target and stick perfectly. It requires a different type of skill - a mix of precision, control, and rhythm - which makes it incredibly rewarding.
GWR: How do you train for your record attempts?
Osman: Whenever I prepare for a record attempt, the first step is always research. I carefully study the current record - who holds it, the distance, and what kind of margin I’d need to beat it. Then I build a strategy around the object and technique. I test different throwing styles and angles, focus on distance, and find the most effective method. Once I lock in the right formula, I train intensively to perfect it. Every movement is planned and nothing is left to chance.
GWR: Do you have any other items that you'd love to throw for a GWR title?
Osman: Absolutely! There are still many unique objects I’d love to throw. Currently, I’m planning a record attempt with my friend Dariusz Słowik, a former discus throwing champion. We’re working on a project involving throwing a washing machine! Additionally, I’m exploring new record title ideas involving objects like American footballs, tennis balls, and other items that demand both power and technique. I've already submitted some applications and plan to begin trial sessions soon.
GWR: If you had to attempt a record that wasn't based around throwing, what would it be?
Osman: I’ve definitely been thinking about records outside of throwing as well although I haven’t finalized anything yet. I’m especially drawn to visually unique and balance-based challenges. For example, I’m considering attempting to balance a bicycle on my chin, or even more extreme ideas like balancing a motorized object such as a chainsaw or a scooter. These kinds of records push both mental focus and physical control and I enjoy exploring those limits.
GWR: What does being a Guinness World Records title holder mean to you?
Osman: Being a Guinness World Records title holder means so much to me. It’s an opportunity to showcase my dedication and dreams to the world. Each record I earn isn’t just about personal success, it’s about representing who I am, what I stand for, and what I believe is possible through focus and effort. I feel incredibly proud and fulfilled to carry these record titles. For me, it’s an emotional experience, a deep, irreplaceable sense of purpose and joy. Thank you again for the opportunity to share my story.
Osman's love for the art of throwing - linked with his passion for breaking records - has cemented his place in history as a serial record breaker. And with no plans of stopping any time soon, who knows what will be flying through the air next!
