Most parks would feature plenty of green open spaces and maybe a nice bench to sit on and take in the views. The new record we are about to show you has both... just smaller... much smaller.

The park in question is located in Nagaizumi Town, Shizuoka, just over an hour from Tokyo, Japan. After a short stroll from Nagaizumi Town Hall around a residential area, you will notice an object on an empty space.

This is the world's smallest park. The area is just 0.24 m² - which is equivalent to two sheets of A3 paper. The park features an entrance, a small bench, and some grass.

According to Shuji Koyama, who is a team leader at the construction management division of Nagaizumi Town, the park was created in 1988 to make best use of free space on the road.

Smallest park being measured by an adjudicator

"Back then, a staff member went on a holiday to the US, they found the previous record holder for the smallest park (Mill Ends Park in Portland, Oregon). So they wanted to create an even smaller park."

Since its creation, Nagaizumi Town has been unofficially calling the park the world's smallest park. Because of its size, the park was often picked up by the media. Otherwise, the park is used by locals as a place to relax, as well as by tourists taking photos.

However, the town wanted to make this park officially the world's smallest. In order to do this, they brought in a professional surveyor to measure the exact area of the park and gathered additional information as required by GWR guidelines.

Koyama said that he was relieved that his town's park has officially become the world's smallest park.

We want to continue maintaining the park with the community, as well as creating a landscape that is more social media friendly, so that even more people will find attractions of our town. - Shuji Koyama
