Guinness World Records has been monitoring social media world records since their invention in the early 2000s.

Long gone are the times when people 'poked' on Facebook and shared their mixtapes on MySpace; now we track trends on TikTok and likes on Instagram.

Lionel Messi finally managed to get his hands on the FIFA World Cup at the end of 2022 as his national side Argentina beat France on penalties after drawing the match 3-3 in normal time.

The carousel post had 75,471,947 likes as of March 2023 and surpassed the 'World Record Egg', the previous record holder, in under 48 hours.

It wasn't Lionel Messi's first record, of course, but it was his first on social media

His sporting rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, currently holds the title for most followers on Instagram.

He overtook singer Selena Gomez in 2018 and now boasts 621 million followers as of February 2024.

Most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours

In 2019 and 2020, this record flip-flopped between two Korean pop giants.

BLACKPINK first held this title with the song "Kill This Love" but the record is now held by BTS for the song "Dynamite".

The video got viewed 101,100,000 times in the first 24 hours after it was released on 21 August 2020.

That means that, on average, one in every 77 people in the world viewed this video on that day.

BTS also held the record for their song with Halsey, "Boy With Luv".

First person to reach one million followers on Threads

More famously known for his mega productions on YouTube, MrBeast actually first set a record on new social media platform Threads.

Launched in July 2023, it became a race for influencers and brands to gain followers as quickly as possible and it took MrBeast just over 24 hours.

And MrBeast - real name Jimmy Donaldson - jokingly then asked his new followers if he should become the new Threads CEO in his first post on the platform.

He has since only posted four times on the platform, remaining much more active on X and YouTube itself.

The channel also has the most subscribers on YouTube with 269 million as of June 2024.

Most viewed video on TikTok

Having first made a name for himself on short form video platform Vine, Zach King can be officially be called the King of TikTok.

His video titled "Zach King's Magic Broomstick" was viewed 2.2 billion times as of March 2022.

The video is one of Zach's classic optical illusion videos, using camera trickery and editing wizardry to fool the audience.

Zach now boasts over 82 million followers on the platform as well as having a strong following on Instagram and YouTube.

Most concurrent viewers for a Twitch stream by an individual

It can easily be forgot by some, but Twitch is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world.

Video streaming allows viewers to interact with their favourite streamers in real time whilst playing video games, exploring urban areas or simply just having a chat.

The Grefg holding his Guinness World Records certificate

It was Spanish streamer David "TheGrefg" Cánovas Martínez who had a peak audience of 2,468,668_ when revealing his new Fortnite skins in 2021.

As well as being prominent on Twitch, TheGrefg boasts over 18 million subscribers on YouTube too.
