Max Park, who last year solved a standard 3x3x3 cube in the fastest time ever (3.13 seconds), has now broken one of his own records for the fastest average time to solve a 7x7x7 rotating puzzle cube.

Max registered an average time of 1 min 41.78 sec after three solves, shaving 34 seconds off his previous record.

He achieved the record in the final of the University Heights Cubing Winter 2024 event in California, USA, on 27 January.

A 7x7x7 cube has about 232 duoquinquagintillion possible combinations, which is more than the number of atoms in the observable universe.

Max is significantly faster at solving it than anyone else – his record is almost eight seconds quicker than the personal best of the second-fastest 7x7x7 cuber, Seung Hyuk Nahm.

Max also holds the single-solve record for the 7x7x7 cube with a time of 1 min 35.68 seconds. He remains the only person to have done it in under 1 min 40 sec.

He recently also broke both of his 5x5x5 world records at the UCSD Winter 2023 event in December. In the final, he clocked a single-solve time of 32.60 sec and an average-solve time of 35.94 sec.

Max is autistic, and his parents say that speedcubing has been a “good therapy” for him.

“There was a time when Max couldn’t even open water bottles, but he showed interest in solving Rubik’s Cubes,” they said.

Max competed in his first competition at the age of 10, and now aged 22, he currently holds almost every speedcubing world record. Here’s his complete list:

  • Fastest time to solve a 3x3x3 cube: 3.13 sec
