A Blue Peter presenter has nabbed yet another record for the long-running BBC children's show after an exciting head-to-head with a fellow star.

Joel Mawhinney took on Stephen Mulhern, host of ITV's In For A Penny, as they battled it out for a brand new record title.

The pair both had their sights set on claiming the record for fastest time to put on five jackets, and in a nod to their love of magic, they attemped the record with brightly coloured sequin jackets, just like the one Stephen famously wears on his show.

Under the watchful eye of Guinness World Records official Adjudicator Joanne Brent, they each took their turn to beat the 45 second minimum.

And there could only be one winner!

Magician and presenter Stephen went first, and adrenaline skyrocketed in the TV studio when one of his jackets popped open after he had fastened it.

As the jacket was not re-fastened before he put on a new one, it didn’t count towards his total.

A children’s show presenter himself, Stephen began his television career presenting CITV’s Finger Tips from 2001 to 2004.

The British comedian also recently celebrated the release his new book, Max Magic: The Greatest Show on Earth.

Joel was up next.

After struggling a bit while training for the record, the 25-year-old presenter smashed the challenge on his first try by correctly putting on all jackets in jaw-dropping time.

Joel came out on top, achieving the record with a staggering 28.63 seconds.

That's less than five seconds per jacket, buttons and all!

That was almost half Stephen's time. Although, despite his little set-back during the attempt, he managed to clock in at a still remarkable time of 42.66 seconds.

After running for almost 65 years, Blue Peter holds the record for the longest-running children's magazine TV programme ever.

It was first transmitted from London's Lime Grove Studios on 16 October 1958, and celebrated its 60th anniversary in October 2018.

Throughout the years, the show has been hosted by several presenters, counting 5,173 episodes (and the number continues to grow!) and a long history of successful record-breaking.

Constantly proposing new exciting records to its audience and guests, the show's presenters are never afraid to challenge themselves.

In March, Blue Peter’s three amazing hosts, Mwasky Mudenda, Abby Cook and Joel, successfully attempted another super fun record.

On the occasion of Red Nose Day (17 March 2023), the BBC rebranded the program as Red Peter and painted the set bright red.

Mwasky, supported by her co-presenters, attempted and smashed (quite literally!) the record for most shaving cream pies thrown in different faces in one minute.

She quickly proved her dedication to the challenge, and effortlessly surpassed the minimum of 20.

Pie after pie, the Blue Peter presenter successfully racked up a total number of 24 pies thrown at different faces, getting everyone from Joel and Abby to the guests in the Manchester studio.

Crowning a successful day with an official Guinness World Records certificate, the record celebrated (among many other activities) a very special day and raised awareness for a good cause.

The record aimed to raise money for Comic Relief within the frame of a jam-packed day full of amazing events.

Now, with this latest adrenaline-packed and visually fun record, the Blue Peter team achieves yet another certificate and confirms their record-breaking streak.

But the Blue Peter team still has many new records in mind for the future.
