Selena Gomez is the new Queen of Instagram after officially dethroning Kylie Jenner as the app's most followed female.

On 20 December 2021, American media personality Kylie earned the crown for the most followers on Instagram for a female, with 290,683,268 followers.

But on 23 February 2023, she was dethroned by pop star Selena, who surpassed Kylie’s following with a whopping 381,580,525 followers.

The Kylie Cosmetics mogul now trails closely behind with 379 million fans.

Selena was taking a hiatus from Instagram but returned to the social media platform stronger than ever.

Selena’s recent record means she ranks fourth overall for the most followers on Instagram, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi, and Instagram’s own account ahead of her.

Selena returned to the popular social media app last month, telling her followers in a caption, “Wait, can I tell you I’m back on Instagram?”

It isn’t the first time Selena has taken a hiatus from her social media platforms.

In a Vanity Fair article, the former Disney star mentioned she allows her assistant to manage her accounts because of the mean comments she often receives.

"People can call me ugly or stupid and I'm like, Whatever. But these people get detailed,” Selena told the magazine.

“They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety… I couldn't do it anymore. It was a waste of my time.”

Selena, who has been open about her mental health struggles and ongoing battle with Lupus, also told Vanity Fair that she has remained active on TikTok because she feels the platform is “less hostile.”

"There are wonderful things about social media — connecting with fans, seeing how happy and excited they are and their stories,” said Selena.

“But usually that's filtered through [for me now]. I created a system. Everything I do I send to my assistant who posts them."

In spite of her feat, the “Love You Like A Love Song” singer announced that she would once again be taking a break from social media in a TikTok Live clip shared by fans.

"I'm gonna be taking a second from social media 'cause this is a little silly, and I'm 30, I'm too old for this,” said Selena.

“But I love you so much and I'll see you guys sooner than later. I'm just gonna take a break from everything."

The record for the most followers on Instagram belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo, with an impressive 552 million followers.
