Call of Duty is a name known worldwide to even the most casual gamers.

Over the last 20 years, the first person shooter has become the market leader for war games set in the past, present and future.

As of April 2021, Call of Duty was the best-selling first-person shooter videogame series with over 400 million units sold.

And this year’s latest edition, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is hitting players right in the nostalgic feels with recycled multiplayer maps from 2009’s original Modern Warfare 2 as well as a campaign story featuring old favourites including Captain Price, Soap McTavish, Ghost and Vladimir Makarov.

The game series saw a huge spike in popularity during the COVID-19 lockdowns, with its spinoff Warzone series proving extremely popular with new and existing gamers.

As a free to download extension, mainly created to rival the popularity of Fortnite, it pitted up to 125 players against each other in an open world scenario.

This incredibly popular series of games has featured multiple times in both Guinness World Records annuals and the subsequent Gamers Edition.

The Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4 is the most critically acclaimed Call of Duty videogame with a score of 94.16%.

And it was last year’s release of the new Modern Warfare 2 that set a record for the fastest time for a Call of Duty game to earn $1 billion, taking just 10 days from its release.

There is also a lot of money to be made in the eSports world of Call of Duty today, with Tyler ‘aBeZy’ Pharris being the highest-earning Call of Duty player with a whopping $1,584,905.68 – mainly from the 2020 installment called Black Ops Cold War.

Back in 2015, we awarded Ali-A the title of having the most subscribers for a dedicated Call of Duty YouTube channel with over 8.7 million subscribers.

As of 2023, these are no longer records we monitor since the games creators play now vary more than ever before!

With the latest edition due to hit shelves soon, we’d love to know your favourite Call of Duty memory.
