Possessing the rare ability to ‘inflate’ his tongue, 20-year-old Braydon McCullough (USA) has claimed the world record for the largest tongue circumference.
Measuring 16 cm (6.3 in) – over an inch bigger than a golf ball – Braydon’s tongue breaks the previous record of 14.73 cm (5.8 in), set by Sacha Feiner (Belgium) earlier this year.
“All my life I have noticed that I have an abnormally large tongue,” said Braydon, who currently studies industrial engineering at the University of Miami.
Braydon has been inflating his tongue for as long as he can remember, but as a child he never showed anyone because he thought everyone else could do it too.
“I used to always think that my tongue was normal...I guess I was wrong,” he said.
It was only when Braydon started high school that he realized his rotund tongue was rather unique.
“Many of my friends and family had mixed reactions,” he revealed. “They were either amazed or grossed out. Some of them were both! A lot of people have not seen anything quite like my tongue, so they became very intrigued.”
Although inflating his tongue doesn’t cause him any pain, Braydon says it does get sore if he does it frequently in a short time period.
Even when his tongue isn’t inflated, Braydon describes it as naturally “very wide, thick, and pretty long.”
He often accidentally bites the sides of his tongue, and he believes its large size may be the cause of his slight lisp.
Macroglossia is the medical term for an unusually large tongue, but this does not necessarily refer to the ability to inflate the tongue.
Braydon has never visited a doctor to get his tongue checked out because it has never caused him any problems, but after achieving this world record, Braydon is “curious” about what a doctor might say.
Braydon’s tongue now joins the ranks of other record breakers, such as the world’s longest tongue (male), belonging to Nick Stoeberl (USA); the longest tongue (female), belonging to Chanel Tapper (USA); and the widest tongue (male), possessed by Brian Thompson (USA).
