Great-grandad was over 100 years old when he became the world’s oldest best man

A Scottish centenarian became the oldest best man ever when he proudly stood alongside his friend on his wedding day.

Daniel Wilson Clement (UK, b. 24 March 1913) was 102 years and 85 days old when he played a major part in the nuptials of Alexander “Sandy” Little and Susan Davey.

The pair tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Castle Douglas, Scotland, on 17 June 2015.

Daniel’s role in the big day saw him take the superlative best man status from Ronald Hornby (UK), who was 96 years 89 days old when he claimed it.

The groom and best man had been long-time friends and Sandy said he couldn’t imagine saying “I do” without Daniel by his side.

Sandy first got to know his best man, who he affectionately calls uncle, through his grandmother.

He told the Daily Record at the time: “I have known uncle Dan all my life. There was nobody else for the job.”

Daniel, a great-grandfather from Bridge of Dee, Kirkcudbrightshire, didn’t let the responsibility stress him out though.

He told the newspaper: “It’ll just be another day. But I’m sure it’ll be a good one.”

Daniel also acted as a witness at the ceremony alongside family friend Heather Dodds.

Sandy and Susan’s wedding even made the front page of The Galloway News thanks to Daniel’s history making stint as best man.

The record for oldest bridesmaid was claimed by Edith Gulliford (UK), who was 105 years 171 days old when she took part in the wedding of Kyra Harwood and James Lucas in 2007.

It’s never too old to be a best man or a bridesmaid, just like it’s never too late to find true love as proved by the oldest ever bride and groom.
