fastest time to wrap five portions of chips split image

A new record has been set for the fastest time to wrap five portions of chips by Zohaib Hussain (UK), in Cardiff, UK, on 27 May 2022.

Zohaib surpassed the previous record - which had not been broken since 2018 - by over 4 seconds, with a new time of 40.13 seconds.

The attempt was made at Zero Plus Fish Bar in Canton, Cardiff, in celebration of National Fish and Chip Day 2022.

"I've always been pretty quick, in a busy shop you don't have a choice," Zohaib said of his super-speedy wrapping skills.

"As I work in the shop every day, I'm wrapping chips on a daily basis so you could say I've had 20 years of practice." -  Zohaib Hussain

Despite his years of experience, the day of the record attempt was nerve-wracking for the talented fish frier.

"I was nervous on the day as I knew the cameras would pick up on any mistakes however I was getting 41 - 42 seconds in practice so I knew that I could get to 42 seconds within a couple of attempts."

"My best time in practice was 40.00 seconds. I was over the moon when my 1st attempt was 40.13 seconds.

"we've had lots of customers say that we serve very quickly, we see it as good customer service."

Zero Plus Fish Bar has been in Zohaib’s family for over 30 years, and Zohaib has worked in the shop since he was 15 years old.

"My parents brought Zero Plus Fish Bar in 1991 and I have managed it since finishing university and now own the business."

Zohaib is passionate about his trade and his business has enjoyed many successes, including winning the Potato Councils Perfect Portion 2009 and the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year 2012.

"On the leadup to me winning the Young Fish Frier of the Year competition, I had a documentary team follow my journey, this also included me frying and eating Fish and Chips with HRH Prince Charles."

"I'm the Chairman for the National Federation of Fish Friers in Wales. I've also had the opportunity to be a Finals Judge for the National Fish and Chip Awards on Multiple Occasions," said Zohaib.

And now Zohaib has another achievement to add to his list – a Guinness World Records title.

"[It] feels great, the shop has been in our family for over 30 years. We now hold a Guinness World Record for the work we complete on a daily basis. We strive to be professionals in our industry."

Zohaib doesn’t plan on breaking another Guinness World Records title just yet, but he’s not ruling it out completely.

"I'm happy with this one for now but if another chip related record pops up then I might have a go."
