Ariana-Grande-Performing-at-the-2020-VMA-Awards

The VMAs might look a bit different this year – but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited to celebrate their favourite artist’s during MTV’s big award night.

A chance for musicians to be recognized for the visual assets that accompany their lyrical genius, this year, the lineup is just a fierce as year’s passed – featuring performances of BTS, Doja Cat, and J Balvin.

As it so happens, some performers have already broken records before this Sunday’s event, having upped the number of video music award nominations they’ve received in their career.

But we’re keeping a close eye on the talented individuals who are set to break official Guinness World Records titles this weekend – so here’s what you can expect at the 2020 MTV VMA Awards.

Nomination Records

Before the opening act has even begun, the iconic Alicia Keys, Fall Out Boy, and pop princess Ariana Grande have already shattered records.

Alicia kicks it off for achieving the most MTV VMA nominations for Best R&B at 6, as of 30 July 2020 for her hit music video “Underdog”.

Following her nomination record is American rock band Fall Out Boy, who has earned the most MTV VMA nominations for Best Rock at 9, with their video for “Dear Future Self (Hands Up)”.

Last but not least, Queen Ari reigns with the most MTV VMA nominations for Best Collaboration at 6, thanks to her collaboration with Justin Bieber for “Stuck With U”, a soft pop hit the pair released while many were at home during the quarantine.

Records to Watch

For the upcoming day, there is a list of artists who have the potential to make history to day of the MTV Music Awards. Here are the possible Guinness World Records title holders.

Youngest artist to win the MTV VMA for Video of the Year

Billie Eilish (USA) broke several records at this year’s GRAMMY awards, namely in the “youngest” categories for reaching such success early on in her career. If her video for “everything i wanted” wins Sunday, she will have earned the record at 18 years 256 days old at the 37th MTV Video Music Awards.

Most wins of the MTV VMA for Video of the Year

Taylor Swift is known for her large fanbase and, with the help of their votes, she could potentially achieve the Most wins of the MTV VMA for Video of the Year - making it her third. Her video for “The Man” is up for the award this year, the song originating from her hit album Lover.

Most wins of the MTV VMA for Best Hip Hop

This record title is up for grabs between two top rap performers Eminem and Drake. Should Eminem win, he will have tied with Drake’s and Nicki Minaj current standing. However, if Future and Drake prevail with their nomination for “Life Is Good”, he will have increased his record to four total wins.

Most wins of the MTV VMA for Best R&B

Alicia Keys may have already broken a record for the VMAs this year, but that isn’t stopping her from getting even more. She’s up against top-tier talent this year, such as fellow artists Khalid, H.E.R. and The Weeknd, but should she win this category, she would have broken a tie with 3 wins in this same title over the last two decades.
