It took Christine Sinclair just 23 minutes of Canada’s match against St Kitts and Nevis to make football history.

Her quickfire double strike on 29 January 2020 took her to 185 international goals – the most goals scored in international football matches by an individual

She surpassed Abby Wambach’s female and overall record of 184 goals. The male record, held by Iran’s Ali Daei, is 109.

Christine made her international debut aged 16 at the 2000 Algarve Cup. She took just two games to get on the scoresheet, hitting the net during Canada’s 2–1 defeat to Norway on 14 March.

In 2012, she scored an incredible 23 goals in 22 games in the calendar year. Six of these came at the 2012 Olympics in London, UK – the most goals scored in an Olympic women’s football tournament

Christine has also made her mark at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With her strike against the Netherlands on 20 June 2019, she equalled Marta’s record for most FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals tournaments scored in by a player – five consecutive editions, from 2003 to 2019.

Aged 36, Christine still has plenty of time to add to her remarkable goal tally. With typical understatement, she said of her record-breaking strike: “All I could think was, ‘Don’t miss the net’.”
