The watermelon is such a popular fruit that it gets its own celebratory day in the US.

A little over 5,000 years ago, the first watermelon was discovered in the dry lands of Egypt and introduced to the world - a delicious find that would soon be enjoyed by people all over the world.

With green stripes and a scrumptious red centre, watermelons are the perfect snack for poolside parties, summer barbecues, and of course, record-breakers!

To mark National Watermelon Day, grab a wedge of juicy goodness and sit down to appreciate these fruity achievements.

1. Most watermelons crushed with the head in one minute

Most watermelons crushed with the head in one minute

No fruit stands a chance against Tafzi Ahmed's rock hard skull. In a time span of one minute, the German strongman smashed a total of 43 watermelons using solely his head.

The record was achieved at the Rose Festival in Germany back in 2011.

Since then, he has defended his title and has appeared on the truTV show Guinness World Records Gone Wild

2. Fastest time to crush three watermelons with the thighs

The bulky fruit doesn’t stand a chance against Olga Liashchuk’s powerful vice-like thighs!

In a matter of 14.65 seconds, three watermelons exploded from the pressure of her grip. With her strong, muscular legs, Olga achieved this smashing record in 2014 on the set of Lo Show Dei Record in Milan, Italy.

The Ukrainian's greatest ambition is to become the world’s strongest woman.

3. Heaviest watermelon

Heaviest watermelon

Watermelons are pretty heavy compared to the average fruit, but the heaviest watermelon ever recorded registered an incredible 350.5 lbs - comparable to the weight of three average teenagers.

It was grown by Chris Kent in Tennessee, USA. Kent was awarded the title at the Operation Pumpkin Festival, where his record broke the previous benchmark by a hefty 82 lbs.

4. Watermelon seed spitting - farthest distance

When eating watermelons, most people tend to spit out the seeds - but no one does it quite like Jason Schayot from the USA.

In De Leon, Texas, Schayot spit a watermelon seed an incredible distance of 75 feet and 2 inches. That’s nearly the width of an Olympic swimming pool!

One of our older records in this list, Jason's record was set in 1995 and has not been beaten since.

5. Most watermelons chopped on the stomach on a bed of nails in one minute

This record involves machetes, nails, and we imagine a fair amount of pain. It was a challenge taken on by serial record breaker Ashrita Furman and Bipin Larkin during a Facebook Live broadcast in Jamaica, New York, USA in 2016.

While Ashrita laid on a bed of nails, Bipin lined watermelons on his friend’s stomach and quickly sliced each one open as quickly as possible.

After a series of slashes, the pair achieved the record with a total of 14 melons.
