Today marks National Doughnut Day in the US! The occasion is honoured on the first Friday of June each year… and who wouldn’t want to celebrate such a delicious event?

National Doughnut Day first started in 1938 to honour The Salvation Army’s “doughnut girls,” who served the sugary snacks to American soldiers during World War 1.

The largest doughnut mosaic was created with 7,040 doughnuts at the Lviv Pampykh Festival in Lviv, Ukraine, on 07 Jan 2012. The attempt took place on Ukrainian Christmas day as part of their Pampukh Festival. After the attempt all the doughnuts were distributed to the public who had gathered on Market Square, where the mosaic was created.

A team of eight from 20th Century Fox and Capital Radio built a pyramid of 1,764 ring doughnuts, reaching a record height of 110.5 cm (43.5 in)
