For many a science fiction fan within this galaxy, May 4 marks Star Wars Day – an annual event which sees aficionados of the hugely successful movie series celebrate Star Wars culture all over the world.
 
In case you hadn’t guessed, the date relates to a pun on one of the space saga’s most quoted lines – “May the force be with you”.

1. Highest box-office film gross by a science-fiction film series

 
As of 16 January 2017, the films in the Star Wars series had collectively – including re-issues and special editions – grossed a staggering $7,456,076,338 worldwide at the box office, according to figures from The Numbers. This figure includes the box-office gross for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the latest instalment which was released in December 2016.
 

2. Highest-grossing live-action film with a female star

 
With a total worldwide box office gross of $1,050,789,328 (£844,652,000) as of 12 April 2017, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – in which Felicity Jones (UK) takes top billing as Jyn Erso – is the highest-grossing film ever to feature a woman as the top-billed star.

3. Biggest Hollywood movie premiere

 
On 14 Dec 2015, the Los Angeles premiere of The Force Awakens took place across a quarter-mile stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. The film screened in three venues – the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre and El Capitan – with a total capacity of 6,700 seats.
 

4. Most expensive figurines sold at auction

 
A sale of Action Man and Star Wars figurines and accessories made £180,000 ($256,800) at Vectis Toy Auction House in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, UK, on 27 May 2015. Until then, they had languished in the garage of retired toy-sales rep Doug Carpenter. He had been allowed to keep them after manufacturer Palitoy ceased trading in the 1980s.

5. Fastest marathon dressed as a Star Wars character

 
Jeremy Paul Allinson, 42, a RAF Officer from Benson, Oxford ran this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon dressed as a storm trooper in a record-breaking 4 hrs 59 min 12 sec. Before the race he said he hopes ‘The Force’ will overcome ‘The Burn’ on marathon day! Today he is competing in a 40 mile ultra-run finishing at the home of Star Wars - Pinewood Studios – all in honour of Star Wars Day.

6. Most valuable movie franchise

 
Star Wars (USA) is not the highest-grossing film franchise, but it is the most valuable, with a revenue of $41.98 bn (£28.92 bn), including toys and merchandise estimated at $17 bn (£11.7 bn).
 

7. Largest collection of Star Wars memorabilia

 
There are few people as passionate about Star Wars as Steve Sansweet (USA).

He has collected so many pieces of memorabilia relating to his favourite movie franchise that he can’t log them fast enough. He had 92,360 items at the last official count. However, he owns an estimated 500,000 items in total, making his official count a mere 18.4% of his actual collection.

Posted on 19 Oct 2015, the trailer for the seventh instalment in the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens, had amassed 91,512,152 views as of 11 Apr 2016.
 
 

9. Largest Star Wars sculpture

 
The 11th Brigade of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force in Hokkaido spent almost one month crafting 3,175 tonnes (7 million lb) of snow into Snow Star Wars for the 66th Sapporo Snow Festival, which opened on 5 February 2015. The Lucasfilm-approved sculpture measured 15 m tall by 23 m wide (49 ft by 75 ft) and features a lightsaber-wielding Darth Vader with three Stormtroopers, Vader's TIE Advanced fighter and the Death Star.
 

10. Highest-grossing Star Wars movie

 
With total worldwide box office takings of $2,058,662,225 (£1.7 billion), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (USA, 2015) is the highest grossing film in the Star Wars franchise to date, and is currently the overall third-highest-grossing movie of all-time.
